Myth: Deforestation is only a problem in the Amazon. Reality: While deforestation rates are high in the Amazon, all major tropical forests--including those in the Americas, Africa, Southeast Asia, and Indonesia--are shrinking. For example, satellite images suggest that the deforestation rate in Indonesia doubled between 2000 and 2012. According to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, which monitors the world's forests, our planet currently loses an area of forest the size of 20 football fields every minute.
