  • Learning Through Uncertainty: Alpha Centauri’s Exoplanet Candidate

A portion of star system Alpha Centauri as imaged by the James Webb Space Telescope. The image is toward the center and extends toward the top and bottom. It is mostly faint red with black grainy lines throughout. In the center is a small star icon, marking where the host star is located, which has been blocked by a special instrument on Webb. A small, white ring with dashed lines encircles the star icon. A larger, thick ring encompasses the small circle. Text in the top center of the thick ring reads “August 2024.” Within the larger circle is a fuzzy white dot, which is highlighted by a small circle and labeled “Exoplanet Candidate.” White text at top reads “Over the course of multiple observations, Webb rolled to rotate its field of view and shift the pattern of light.” Title text in the lower left reads “Learning Through Uncertainty: Alpha Centauri’s Exoplanet Candidate.”
  • Did You Know: Planets Around Other Stars

At left is an artist's concept of a field of potential exoplanets. In the top right corner is the "Did You Know?" logo. Just below is a yellow box with text that reads "There are many planets outside our solar system." More text appears below.
  • Celestial Tour: Dark Constellations

Painting of the night sky. Text in the top left corner reads "Painting of the Inca view of the night sky, Cusco, Peru." Text at bottom reads "For the Incas, the band of the Milky Way was the celestial river, Mayu, the source of Earth's water."
