Dual Quasars Spotted.
Image, split screen view of double quasars.
Text, Astronomers have used NASA's Hubble Space Telescope to find a needle in the cosmic haystack: a pair of double quasars.
Quasars' bright glow is created as matter disappears into a super-massive black hole and radiation is released.
Image, double quasars surround by streams of blue and purple interstellar gas and dust.
Text, Scientists think these two pairs of quasars are the cores of merging galaxies.
The chaotic mergers are tossing gas and dust around and "feeding" the black holes.
These images, at 10 billion light years away, provide insight into the peak era for galaxy formation and mergers.
