Center of the Milky Way Galaxy

About This Image

Location: The Galactic Center of the Milky Way

Distance from Earth: 27,000 light-years

Image Size: About 130 light years across and 250 light years long

Observatories: Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, Chandra X-ray Observatory

To see through the obscuring dust and reveal the intense activity near the Milky Way’s core, several observatories needed to collaborate, resulting in this composite image. Each telescope’s contribution is represented in a different color:
  • Yellow: near-infrared observations of Hubble,
  • Red: infrared observations of Spitzer,
  • Blue and violet: X-ray observations of Chandra.
