Center of the Milky Way Galaxy
Center of the Milky Way Galaxy
About This Image
Location: The Galactic Center of the Milky Way
Distance from Earth: 27,000 light-years
Image Size: About 130 light years across and 250 light years long
Observatories: Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, Chandra X-ray Observatory
To see through the obscuring dust and reveal the intense activity near the Milky Way’s core, several observatories needed to collaborate, resulting in this composite image. Each telescope’s contribution is represented in a different color:
- Yellow: near-infrared observations of Hubble,
- Red: infrared observations of Spitzer,
- Blue and violet: X-ray observations of Chandra.

Center of the Milky Way Galaxy Text Description
Extended Description
A multi-wavelength image of the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The image contains gas and dust of many different shapes, textures and colors. On the far left of the image, a large object, an X-ray binary, glows bright blue. To the upper right of the X-ray binary, there are several red and orange cliff-like ridges, known as the Arches Cluster. To the bottom right of the X-ray binary, there is a bright red object — a cluster of stars known as the Quintuplet Cluster — and another orange and red ridge that surrounds the cluster from its left to its top right in a clockwise direction. The middle right of center is a bright white area, where the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole resides. Between the supermassive black hole and the X-ray binary is a huge area of dense gas in orange and red. Toward the bottom left of the supermassive black hole is a pocket of blue gas. Scattered across the image are blue, red, yellow and purple dots, which are stars and other compact objects.
Ten points of interest are scattered about the image, containing various symbols, including:
Ten points of interest are scattered about the image, containing various symbols, including:
- A white box with a dot in its upper left corner and a triangle within, which represents an image.
- A plus symbol, which represents an overlay.
- An equilateral triangle that points to the right, which represents a video.
Detailed descriptions about the objects named above are provided at each of these points.
